At first this assignment was pretty
easy, describing a space using just sound. I had no problem listening and finding
sounds usually ignored or pushed assisted by louder sounds. I liked the idea of
learning about other sounds to put into videos besides just silence I always
felt that silence in any sort of movie is only used for a purpose, such as
making someone uncomfortable or to add suspense while wait for an answer or
whatever the case may be.
The second part of this assignment
has been a lot harder then I thought it was going to be. I’m supposed to take
the sounds used in the first part and create a song out of them. I am no song
writer is what I’m learning with this. I have ideas and when I try them out no
matter what I do it just sounds like noise. I have a whole new respect for DJ’s
that do this for a living. At first I tried mixing it up in a faster beat like
a Fatboy slim song of Skrillex but that didn’t work out so well. I went with
what I knew better and my beat turned into a more of a rock based rhythm.
Overall I liked the idea of what I was trying but I feel that the outcome for
this project might never turn out like I imagine in my head.

I myself am a musician. I play guitar but also DJ on the side from time to time. I believe you absolutely hit the nail on the head. When I envision something in my head the product that I am usually left with is very different then what I first envisioned. This however is one of the beauties of music. Sometimes the end product is even better then what your originally set out to create.
ReplyDeleteI too am interested in experimenting with sound editing in videos. You can make such interesting feelings simply with the sounds you put behind an image. One of my favorite uses of this is in the film There Will Be Blood. The score was done by Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood and he used so many rustic percussion and the mood created was like none I'd ever heard. I also found it quite hard to make the soundscape into a musical composition, but my background in drumming helped a lot, I think.
ReplyDeleteWhen going into the second part of the project I thought that it would be fairly easy, just add some rhythm and a nice beat. When I was composing, if you stretch to that word, it most certainly was not as I had pictured in my mind, like you said; though I didn’t think it sounded like noise exactly, just a very poorly written piece of music. Now again when I listen to it, I feel that it sounds more like noise then it did to begin with. I feel that this may be because when I originally put it together I was very familiar with the individual sounds because of the activity that we did; now that there has been some time between then and now, I hear less of the individual sounds and more of the whole. I think this is important to keep in mind, that when I am creating sound for a video I need to give myself time away from it, just as a painter needs to step away from their canvas and look at it from afar, from a different angle.
